May 17, 2013 First light crawls across the lake carving geese and birds against the purple sky, orange flames spiraling into spring cold, the language of the sun written in light upon the sleeping world, the night walkers solace folded like the heron’s broad wing, the coots thin faces suddenly white on the edges of the wind, drifting in the shallows as if on the first morning, their wings on the water beside swaying cattails disturbing the peace with their wildness. http://donhynes.com/blog/?p=1277

March 28, 2013 Between me and thee thin blades of grass, light breeze upon the sea; clouds in luminous mountains, otters among the rocks, the ebb tide gathering force as I lift out over the water the harmonic reset of birth saline and rich, knowledge in my bones of growth and dying, the cry from soul more piercing than the gull, telling you in simple words of love for all you’ve given, pardon for the many griefs and the honor of leaving on the tide when the pull of moon becomes too strong for hands and feet. http://donhynes.com/blog/?p=1232

I swear off disbelief while she dresses, the fullness of life so unexpected and practice like a child on the impossible violin amazed and delighted over and again by the appearance of music. http://donhynes.com/blog/?p=1224

March 14, 2013 Thankful for is a short path with sure ending; this world has its limits, happiness going just so far. Hidden away in the mountains of Tibet monasteries with chanting so deep layers of stone shift and change, mountains awaken and merchants of China watch their goods dissolve like morning mist. Tell me what you find in the brush that grows in sand stirred and sent by river’s rising. From here I see water dripping from rocks green glow and crystal in the smell of moss and mud. Beyond the rim of thankful for the deeper world shines keeping pace with the night sky, renewing with hunger the grace that abides like a rich painting by a tireless artist on a path that flows with life.

March 8, 2013 What to do returning to life after triage and repair, no bullet to the head or wreck on the highway but a death for the soul, with images of self dissolving like water, reaching for your hand before I know to form words, the incisions slow healing and then the day softly opens like an eyrie above the spreading land, safe against the rock of all that’s gone before, looking into the distance with infant gaze, old wisdom in the eyes, the illusion upset, heart open, determined not to be undone. http://donhynes.com/blog/?p=1214

Feb. 28, 2013 Old and slow like a rock for my family or fracture on the broken scree of a sliding slope, I lay down aching and wake with a groan as I hold my gut and let voice drain the painful feeling. I always wanted to mean more to them; perhaps this is how, by knowing the earth of my own body, aged and faltering on the slow descent. What is difficult for me looks solid to them, dependable, trustworthy; I need to remember this as I struggle to the bathroom fending off appointments. I’m not what I think or feel for that matter but the carving I’ve become, willing to be like the ancient whale covered in debris, rusted iron and fissured skin crusted with barnacles, lumbering through blue green depth to become the ocean’s memory.

Jan. 24, 2013 I freed the slaves, the ones I’ve chained to my inner plantation, the shadow ground tilled with fear of wrong doing, the harvest of insecurity I continued to reap by keeping chattel in irons forged with accusation, the hammer and tong of lies and betrayal, ancestral bitterness locking their images into a recurring nightmare; then the proclamation came on a sudden shaft of unfettered thought, realizing the evil was no longer needed, the plantation liberated, captives freed who released freed me for a new land beyond the hovels and tired labor where earth breathes on the rise and fall of freedom’s heartbeat precious to every living thing. http://donhynes.com/blog/?p=1173

Jn. 11, 2013 Gunnysacks cover the winter crop, the root cellar dry and warm in its burrow; outside the sea lifts in the driving wind, the long arc of sand shaped and re-shaped by the fierce hand that forms the air and lifts the gulls in one motion. A part of me wants to lay down in the dust of potatoes, the ripening odor of apples, to sleep and wake with the dreams of bear and hunger of a new born. I want to fall further than night into the color behind stars, the deep dark of space beyond all light and let long months go by with hard shelled squash and seed corn while I nurture and dry my desire, then like an Irish spud send out long thin eyes for the first sight of tomorrow. http://donhynes.

Jan. 4, 2013 On a trail down to the hidden cove and one along the mountain river, the brown earth and rolling sea spoke to us the way they did; I listened and hoped, later pounding grief into sand, giving ocean back her tears, blaming myself for the web soft and wet that bound me to what hurt against the movement of the tide. To free another one must free oneself, a godlike act, for where is freedom born but within great stones and the pulse that breathes upon the sea? Your narrow footsteps marked the earth, a trace the deer avoid, the sadness of all you denied filling the cove with salt while seals bark in the rising mist, darkness settles onto the gravel beach, the old trees remembering, forgiving. http://donhynes.com/blog/?p=1157

To understand water is a gift, its softness lifting in cold air sweeping in waves along the river, cascading on iridescent green needles until the ground, the sky and water are one, the sound of rain opening, tenderness swelling in every drop. http://donhynes.com/blog/?p=1115

I finally sleep, my body waking with the gravity of stone, peace like an old friend come to visit with unspoken kindness. As leaves let go I begin the drop to winter root; no hurry to the pace governed by rain and cool air, falling from high branches toward earth’s russet blanket and the dark ground of being. http://donhynes.

I sort each night through their purgatory adrift except a dream give them taste of life among the living. In the morning I leave the worn trail knowing one day I’ll look back on those yet alive but now here you are returning my eyes to the light of day, the fruit of our tree upon slender branches with a river of green flowing out from every finger to what wanders in the night.

Oct. 8, 2012 by Stephen Masty (Visitor: “What should be our national mission?”) A mission for Amurika! That’s surely what we need! A moral cause to save the world, a banner and a screed, So thousands of Amurikans, in every foreign land, Exacerbate the problems that we never understand. A mission for Amurika! All spreading like a rash, Our families pay the price, our politicians take the cash; A mission for Amurika! A noble new crusade To mask domestic failures that our decadence has made; Amurika becomes, meanwhile, dead broke and second-rate To hide our own incontinence and glorify the State. No more do dour Yankees toil to build themselves a barn; Nor Southerners a cotton mill to spin their local yarn; Nor tanned Mid-Western farmers volunteer to dig a drain; Nor ranchers, strong and silent men, protect the hill and plain; Nor neighbours build a library, a town hall or a kirk; Let someone do that for us; it is frankly too much work! We will not stop our daughter getting pregnant as a teen, Nor can we teach our younger ones what mathematics mean; Nor switching off the boob-tube, nor snorting less cocaine, Nor sweep our streets ourselves - they’re such a bother to maintain. A mission for Amurika! All rally ‘round the flag! Let others do it for us and success is in the bag! We’ll pay it on our credit cards or write another check And feel completely pious getting suntans on the deck; To solve the Great Unsolvables, to cure all global ills, We’ll watch another ballgame and we’ll pop a few more pills, We’ll stagger to the ‘fridge and back, the better to ensure That through it all we don’t recall the people that we were.

Sept. 27, 2012 When inspiration fails the clock ticks and walls echo, music won’t play, voices annoy, bones ache, fissures open and the Earth groans; habitual and rigid yet afraid of this brittleness I look to dreams and find confusion. On this day of atonement something old must pass away for the new and vital to reappear. Will I leave with the tide or find strength in the wave? I take inventory and forgive following the way of Yom Kippur, fasting from inner noise, freeing the goat of retribution. I go alone to the altar, connecting to the deeper voice as what must go is allowed to pass.

July 20, 2012 The cave at Tiger’s Nest once birthed a Llama guarded now by fortress stone, jagged cliffs and scores of chanting monks. We climb the rain slick path, rutted and rough hewn, until the last flight of flagged steps pass beneath a spindrift waterfall then rise into the blast of horn, murmured prayers and butter lamp smoke. Mother and Father Buddha center one chapel flanked by pairs of tantric lovers and outside, younger monks, heads shaved and robed, play with the aggressive joy of any boys. Leaving, we head down the slope of slippery clay to an old toothless woman, barefoot, who laughs at her captured image then continues her vertical climb. As rain and fog decrease the monastery emerges high above, speaking through clouds of what endures, spoken in the sound of prayer, the pilgrim journey in high places and amidst the city noise in the bustle of black smoke, the day to day life we live beneath the brow remote and fierce of Tiger’s Nest.

Seals appear as if by magic and golden eagle brown and tan with spreading wing takes roost while two bald eagles arc to south their white heads flashing. Caterpillars eat our apple trees, the wind holds steady in the south and I poke along the ground like a curious plover crabbing together this dispatch between breaks of cloud where sun will open on the sea and I stay dressed for rain. [Grandfather Rock] http://donhynes.com/blog/?p=920

June 8, 2012 ***** Something had to change the inner structure incomplete, posts are missing, a beam or two, I seem to be leaning, slipping, the architect busy with eraser as so called memories disappear, the carpenter’s pencil fat but sharpened like a knife, timbers take the knife like trees took the saw, the forest but a field of corn, brackets, bolts, a bucket of nails staged with thought and muscle - all this effort to construct a larger room for silence. http://donhynes.com/blog/?p=915

March 2, 2012 Life is a beauty which unfolds. Life is a serenade of prepostery and surprise! But, within the rhythm lies the heart… and beyond the heart lies the wisdom of silence. Oh, what a wonder! The serenity manifest! If I could but hold it, it would be mine! Such a masquerade, such a dance! And the moment’s over. To rest… to weep, no more. SPRING FORTH!!! IT IS TIME!!! Like a frost on the wind we shall blow! Such a tempest! The truth shall unfold, from the mind of the GREAT PLAY! The furthest point of adventure! The highest mountain of fate! BEHOLD, a splendid vision… a movie of the outstretched forgetfulness! BUT to REMEMBER!!! O to remember and fly within, WITHIN towards the FREEDOM! BACK TOWARDS THE CALLING.

Feb. 24, 2012 I pick my way beneath an oily wooden dock, pilings down in sea water, feet invisible in the dark, searching, feeling the old belief in danger; I raise and lower my feet in gravelly sand, edging between sharp barnacle covered posts then out on a rotted step where I hear a great blowing and in the wide cove a whale, silver and magnificent arches its massive fluke calling me out to open sea. http://donhynes.com/blog/?p=709
