May o20, 2013 (NaturalNews) The United States government claims 100% ownership over all your DNA and reproductive rights. This astonishing revelation has emerged from the fact that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office claims the power to assign ownership of your DNA to private companies and universities who apply for patents on your genes. To date, more than 4,000 genes have been assigned ownership to corporations and universities by the U.

Monsanto wins Landmark Patent case in Supreme Court

May 15, 2013 The United States Supreme Court ruled Monday in favor of biotech giant Monsanto, closing the door on a patent case that has pitted a small time farmer from Indiana against a titan of the agriculture industry. The high court said early Monday that 75-year-old farmer Vernon Bowman of Indiana violated Monsanto’s patent rights when he purchased a mix of seeds from a grain elevator that he later planted on his Midwest farm. That mix included patented Roundup Ready soybean seeds manufactured by Monsanto that are sold under license because they can hold up against their namesake, a nasty pesticide regularly used on farms. Bowman argued that he could do whatever he wanted with the Roundup Ready seeds since he obtained them rightfully from a grain elevator and the terms of Monsanto’s licensing agreement under the patent did not apply to him. Under Monsanto’s terms, Roundup Ready seeds can only be harvested once and must not be saved or reused.

U.S. Supreme Court to hear case challenging legitimacy of GM seed-saving prohibitions

Oct. 16, 2012 (NaturalNews) In a landmark case that could either make or break the biotechnology industry as we currently know it, the U.S. Supreme Court will soon decide whether or not corporate seed giants like Monsanto can legitimately sue farmers who reuse second generation, genetically-modified (GM) seeds to grow future crops without paying royalties on them. As it currently stands, Monsanto's patent provisions prohibit seed saving, and require that farmers buy new seeds for planting every single year.

Oct. 8, 2012 How the place of patents is changing in an era of software innovation. ”[C]ompanies [are] caught in a software patent system that federal judges, economists, policy makers and technology executives say is so flawed that it often stymies innovation. Alongside the impressive technological advances of the last two decades, they argue, a pall has descended: the marketplace for new ideas has been corrupted by software patents used as destructive weapons…Patents are vitally important to protecting intellectual property. Plenty of creativity occurs within the technology industry, and without patents, executives say they could never justify spending fortunes on new products.

2/15/12 As the world begins to digest the implications of intellectual property for online censorship, another IP issue threatens an even more fundamental part of our daily lives: our food supply. Backed by legal precedent and armed with seemingly inexhaustible lobbying funds, a handful of multinationals are attempting to use patents on life itself to monopolize the biosphere. Find out more about the process of patenting life and what it means for the food supply on this week's GRTV Backgrounder. Transcript and sources: The oft-neglected legal minefield of intellectual property rights has seen a surge in public interest in recent months due to the storm of protest over proposed legislation and treaties related to online censorship.[1] One of the effects of such legislation as SOPA and PIPA and such international treaties as ACTA is to have drawn attention to the grave implications that intellectual property arguments can have on the everyday lives of the average citizen.
