Teenager invents revolutionary device which has the potential to charge a cell phone within just 20 SECONDS. A California teen has attracted the attention of tech giants Google for her potentially revolutionary invention which charges a phone in 20 seconds flat. The super-fast charging device has been dubbed a supercapacitor by 18-year-old Esha Khare, of Saratoga - as she took home $50,000 from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which took place in Phoenix this week. The device will make waiting hours for a phone to charge a thing of the past and the gizmo packs more energy into a smaller space than traditional phone batteries and holds the charge for longer.

May 10, 2013 (NaturalNews) It's been more than a decade in the making, but now Harvard University researchers have developed a tiny flying drone that is barely larger than a quarter. Robotics researchers at the Ivy League school have achieved a first, reports Forbes: the creation of robotic insects that are capable of flight. A paper detailing their work was recently published in the journal Science. Here's an abstract of the research: Flies are among the most agile flying creatures on Earth. To mimic this aerial prowess in a similarly sized robot requires tiny, high-efficiency mechanical components that pose miniaturization challenges governed by force-scaling laws, suggesting unconventional solutions for propulsion, actuation, and manufacturing.

FW: April 6, 2013 Researchers in India have developed a filter system based on a medicinal herb, which they say can quickly and easily remove fluoride from drinking water. The technology described in the March issue of the International Journal of Environmental Engineering uses parts of the plant Tridax procumbens as a biocarbon filter for the ion. Drinking water can contain natural fluoride or fluoride might be added as a protective agent for teeth by water companies. However, its presence is not without controversy while in some natural drinking water levels may be above those considered safe by the World Health Organisation. Chemist Malairajan Singanan of the Presidency College (Autonomous), in Chennai, points out that the WHO guidelines suggest that a safe level of fluoride is 1.

Zapping the brain with magnets could cure cocaine addiction

April 3, 2013 Changing certain neurons in the brain using magnetic stimulation can wipe away addiction Treatment targets the prefrontal cortex - which controls impulses and decision making Could be tested immediately in humans Cocaine addicts could be cured using a technique that stimulates the brain with magnets. Experiments on mice addicted to cocaine found they were weaned off the drug after laser beams were used to change neurons in a particular part of the brain. Scientists who report their study in the journal Nature say a similar strategy using magnets could work on human drug abusers - and clinical trials should start soon to see if it works. They showed by stimulating a region called the pre-frontal cortex with light they could wipe away addictive behaviour in the lab animals - or conversely turn non-addicted rats into compulsive cocaine seekers. Cocaine addicts could be cured using a technique that stimulates the brain with magnets Professor Antonello Bonci, who led the study, said: 'When we turn on a laser light in the prelimbic region of the prefrontal cortex the compulsive cocaine seeking is gone.

March 18, 2013 On the pilot's computer screen, planted at ground level a few yards from the airport runway here, the data streaming across the display tracked an airplane at 1,300 feet above a small city on the coast, making perfect circles at 150 miles per hour. To the pilot's right, a sensor operator was aiming a camera on the plane to pan, tilt and zoom in a search among the houses on the ground for people who had been reported missing. On his screen, cartoonlike human figures appeared in a gathering around a camp fire between the houses. "There they are," Andrew Regenhard, the pilot and a student, said in a flat tone that seemed out of place with a successful rescue mission. In fact, no one was missing; the entire exercise used imaginary props and locales.

March 14, 2013 (NaturalNews) Most of the recent news coverage involving drones has focused primarily on nefarious uses for them, such as the potential targeting of American citizens - as publicized recently by Sen. Rand Paul - and to spy on us without first establishing probable cause or reasonable suspicion. But one man thinks the real emerging market for drones is far less onerous. In fact, he sees drones as a boon to society, not something inherently evil. John Rimanelli, president and CEO of Detroit Aircraft Corporation, has revived this business which was initially founded in 1922 "to to develop and build unmanned and remotely-controlled autonomous aircraft, or drones," Detroit CBS affiliate WWJ reported.

March 8, 2013 Imagine, for a moment, that you have spent more than two decades in painfully laborious research-- that you have discovered an incredibly simple, electronic approach to curing literally every disease on the planet caused by viruses and bacteria . Indeed, it is a discovery that would end the pain and suffering of countless millions and change life on Earth forever. Certainly, the medical world would rush to embrace you with every imaginable accolade and financial reward imaginable. You would think so, wouldn?t you? Unfortunately, arguably the greatest medical genius in all recorded history suffered a fate literally the opposite of the foregoing logical scenario. In fact, the history of medicine is replete with stories of genius betrayed by backward thought and jealously, but most pathetically, by greed and money.

MQRCH 1, 2013 Features Scientists link two rats’ brains, a continent apart March 03, 2013 RIO DE JANEIRO, March 3 — Creating a “superbrain” of connected minds, scientists on Thursday said they had enabled a rat to help a fellow rodent while the animals were a continent apart but connected through brain electrodes. With electrodes imbedded in its cortex, a rat in a research institute in Natal, Brazil sent signals via the Internet to a counterpart at a university lab in Durham, North Carolina, helping the second animal to get a reward. The exploit opens up the prospect of linking brains among animals to create an “organic computer,” said Brazilian neurobiologist Miguel Nicolelis. It also helps the quest to empower patients stricken with paralysis or locked-in syndrome, he said. “We established a functional linkage between two brains.

3-D Printing Breakthrough With Human Embryonic Stem Cells

Feb. 6, 2013 A team of researchers from Scotland has used a novel 3D printing technique to arrange human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) for the very first time. It is hoped that this breakthrough, which has been published Feb. 5 in the journal Biofabrication, will allow three-dimensional tissues and structures to be created using hESCs, which could, amongst other things, speed up and improve the process of drug testing. In the field of biofabrication, great advances have been made in recent years towards fabricating three-dimensional tissues and organs by combining artificial solid structures and cells; however, in the majority of these studies, animal cells have been used to test the different printing methods which are used to produce the structures.

Feb. 1, 2013 Here is a list of 18 inspiring inventions that never had the chance … THE ORIGINAL ELECTRIC CAR: UNPLUGGED? Perhaps the most notorious suppressed invention is the General Motors EV1, subject of the 2006 documentary, Who Killed the Electric Car? The EV1 was the world’s first mass-produced electric car, with 800 of them up for lease from GM in the late ’90s. GM ended the EV1 line in 1999, stating that consumers weren’t happy with the limited driving range of the car’s batteries, making it unprofitable to continue production. Many skeptics, however, believe GM killed the EV1 under pressure from oil companies, who stand to lose the most if high-efficiency vehicles conquer the market. It didn’t help that CONTINUE READING http://www.

Dec/ 7. 2-12 New technology that will allow information, such as text messages from a mobile phone, to be projected onto a contact lens worn in the human eye has been developed by Belgian researchers. Ghent University's centre of microsystems technology has developed a spherical curved LCD display which can be embedded in contact lenses and handle projected images using wireless technology. "Now that we have established the basic technology, we can start working towards real applications, possibly available in only a few years," said Professor Herbert De Smet. Unlike previous contact lens displays, which are limited to a few small pixels to make up an image, the new technology allows the whole curved surface of the lens to be used.

I mean, come on, what the hell is this 157m high metal structure in the the city of Fushun, in northeast China’s Liaoning province? It’s made of an astounding 3000 tons of steel and it will glow at night — decorated with 12,000 LED lights. According to Fushun Municipal Government’s officials, this titanic structure does absolutely nothing except serve as an elevated sighting position. They claim it is pretty “landscape architecture” — like the Eiffel Tower.

Nov. 13, 2012 Scientists at Stanford University have created fake skin that can heal itself in 30 minutes if torn or cut. Lead researcher, chemical engineering professor Zhenan Bao, and her team concocted the synthetic material from plastic that consists of a long chain of molecules joined by relatively weak hydrogen bonds. This means that the molecules break easily. Tiny particles of nickel were then mixed in to give the plastic conductivity and strength.
