April 30, 2013 Twenty-plus years on, the collapse of the USSR in 1991 threatened massive Western defense budgets, bereft of a major enemy like the “Evil Empire.” Western militaries conveniently found a new global enemy a decade later following the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, and since then, they have struggled in the light of invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan to adapt their strategies to cope with the new threat, making defending the “homeland” the highest priority. While the U.S. created the “Department of Homeland Security,” Washington’s less prosperous European allies have been forced to seek solutions to indigenous defense largely by themselves beyond NATO.

As Cyprus Collapses, It's a Race to the Mediterranean Gas Finish Line

March 22, 2013 Cyprus is preparing for total financial collapse as the European Central Bank turns its back on the island after its parliament rejected a scheme to make Cypriot citizens pay a levy on savings deposits in return for a share in potential gas futures to fund a bailout. On Wednesday, the Greek-Cypriot government voted against asking its citizens to bank on the future of gas exports by paying a 3-15% levy on bank deposits in return for a stake in potential gas sales. The scheme would have partly funded a $13 billion EU bailout. It would have been a major gamble that had Cypriots asking how much gas the island actually has and whether it will prove commercially viable any time soon. In the end, not even the parliament was willing to take the gamble, forcing Cypriots to look elsewhere for cash, hitting up Russia in desperate talks this week, but to no avail.

March 12, 2013 While most would think that the risks junior oil and gas companies are taking in exploring new frontiers as far away as the remote reaches of Africa are related to government instability and conflict, another risk they face is right at home and lies right beyond their network firewalls. Cyber security breaches are becoming more common place as the ranks of junior companies swell and take on new exploration venues with a great deal of energy. But at home their firewalls are not safe and hackers are being paid to find out what juicy exploration news is being discussed in their boardrooms. In Canada—home of some of the most tenacious of these exploration juniors—local media reported late last year that the internal firewall of Telvent Canada Ltd. had been breached by foreign hackers.

Besides, the UN mandated sanctions on any trade with the oil-rich country,” the Wall Street Journal said in a report. “Our policy on Iran is well known.

Feb. 20 2013 have been making the point about crude oil production and capex absolutely CONTROLLING the energy space right now and through 2013 and this week's entry is perfect to point that out again through the released quarterly reports of EOG Resources (EOG) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD). The action in both of these stocks in the market recently have been an oil investors' study --- 2013 is all about crude production and capex for that production. Where are you getting your crude? How much is it costing you to develop? How much will it continue to cost you? When those numbers add up and the results tell a tale of efficiency and growth, you've got a stock that you can confidently hold. Look hard at what I mean in EOG, a recommendation of mine that's just been tearing it up in the last six months: There was another beat in the 4th quarter, but that's hardly what interested me in their report.

Feb. 11, 2013 Pipelines used to be things that were just built without blinking. It is said that there are enough pipelines now in the US to encircle the Earth 25 times with enough left over to also tie a bow around it. Today, getting a pipeline built is not so easy - there are too many environmental concerns and the industry has become highly polarized. But here's one thing that could bring everyone together: pipeline safety technology.

Feb. 7, 2013 Aubrey McClendon is gone – or at least he's on his way out from Chesapeake energy (CHK). But the destruction of the natural gas market, where he was the ringleader in the shale gas land grab and cratering well price, is his real legacy, and not likely to be recovered from anytime soon. While Aubrey will now go into a very wealthy retirement, he leaves behind a decimated market and a long road to making natural gas a true transition fuel to energy independence and a renewable future. The market failed us, failed all of us as a nation – because it couldn't prevent McClendon and Chesapeake from poking holes randomly through Texas and Western Pennsylvania in search of shale gas and ultimately flooding the market with it, cratering the price and its profitability.

Betting on Mediterranean Shale: 3 Plays, 1 Winner

Jan. 28, 2013 The Mediterranean has joined the shale game, but as most of Europe's Mediterranean countries drag their feet, all eyes are on Israel, Turkey, and Algeria. For Israel, it will be a slow road without the majors. For Algeria, it's full speed ahead, in theory—but the foreign interest is just dabbling for now due to a lack of shale infrastructure. For Turkey, the situation is more promising thanks to a renewed interest by the majors and a near-perfect blend of good governance and attractive fiscals.

Jan. 8, 2013 As we begin a new year we wanted to take a look at the current energy landscape and see what the future holds for the global economy, America's oil and gas boom, whether renewables will continue to be a favourite amongst investors and whether we should be focusing more attention on conservation and energy efficiency rather than our continuous effort to increase supply. To help us look at these issues and more we managed to speak with the well known economist James Kwak. James is an associate professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law. He blogs at The Baseline Scenario, which he co-founded with Simon Johnson.

Perhaps the most important thing we need to pay attention to is net energy returns, on which we run society. Massive new discoveries are only netting a fraction of the returns compared to earlier decades. While we must proceed into the energy future with caution—and the knowledge that analysts may be overselling the shale boom—there are also, as always, major opportunities in this story and they can be found in the wider trends related to improving energy efficiency.

Everyone wondered how Russia would respond to Ukraine's attempt at gas independence. But this is what happens when you mess with Gazprom.

Nov. 30, 2012 As Washington hunts ill-defined al-Qaeda groups in the Middle East and Africa, and concerns itself with Iran's eventual nuclear potential, it has a much more pressing problem at home: Its energy grid is vulnerable to anyone with basic weapons and know-how. Forget about cyber warfare and highly organized terrorist attacks, a lack of basic physical security on the US power grid means that anyone with a gun—like disgruntled Michigan Militia types, for instance--could do serious damage. For the past two months, the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has been tasked with creating a security strategy for the electric grid and hydrocarbon facilities through its newly created Office of Energy Infrastructure Security. So far, it's not good news.

Nov. 16, 2012 The "shale revolution" has been grabbing a great deal of headlines for some time now. A favourite topic of investors, sector commentators and analysts – many of whom claim we are about to enter a new energy era with cheap and abundant shale gas leading the charge. But on closer examination the incredible claims and figures behind many of the plays just don't add up. To help us to look past the hype and take a critical look at whether shale really is the golden goose many believe it to be or just another over-hyped bubble that is about to pop, we were fortunate to speak with energy expert Arthur Berman.

The IEA said the reason for this was the big growth and development in the US of extracting oil from shale rock. This has enabled the US to gain significantly more extractable oil resources. As a result, the IEA predicts the US will become "all but self-sufficient" in its energy needs by around 2035.

October 7, 2012 Gov. Jerry Brown took emergency action Sunday hoping to quickly drive down gas prices, which skyrocketed almost 50 cents across California in a week. Brown directed the California Air Resources Board to increase the fuel supply by allowing the immediate production of the more abundant winter blend of gasoline used in California. The state doesn’t typically switch to its winter blend, which contains butane, until Nov. 1.

Energy New Front in Economic Warfare - Thousands of Bombs Dumped in Gulf of Mexico Pose Huge Threat to Oil Rigs - Money: A New (Decentralized) Shade of Green

Oct. 3, 2012 Energy New Front in Economic Warfare Opposition leaders in Canada suggested a string of cyber security threats to domestic companies might be the work of Chinese hackers. Twice last week, the Canadian government confirmed two separate companies -– both in the energy sector -- were the target of cyber-attacks. In the United States, meanwhile, the Obama administration said national security interests trumped energy concerns and blocked a Chinese company from constructing wind turbines near a Navy installation in Oregon. While the Chinese military isn't the overt threat like the Soviet Union was, Beijing's rise as an economic power has seemingly sparked a war of economies.

Mecca to Become First Solar City in Saudi Arabia

Sept. 28, 2012 Mecca, the birthplace of Muhammad, and Islam's holiest city, has plans to become the first city in Saudi Arabia to run completely on solar power. The Saudi Arabian government has said that it will invest $109 billion to establish a strong solar industry across the nation. The King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy program is the jewel in this crown, and aims to develop 41 gigawatts of solar capacity over the next 20 years. 25 gigawatts will be installed in the form of solar thermal plants, and the remaining 16 gigawatts will be supplied by photovoltaic panels.

Sept. 25, 2012 The first concern of the Emir of Qatar is the prosperity and security of the tiny kingdom. To achieve that, he knows no limits. Stuck between Iran and Saudi Arabia is Qatar with the third largest natural gas deposit in the world. The gas gives the nearly quarter of a million Qatari citizens the highest per capita income on the planet and provides 70 percent of government revenue.

The Multi-Fuel Generator: Don’t Depend on Just Gas…

Fw 9/14/12 (July 16, 2012) Having a generator for back-up power is great – unless you don’t have the fuel to run the generator. The irony of the portable back-up generator – most of them, at least – is that they run on gas. And what’s the item that’s usually hard to get when the power’s down? [1] Gas. About two weeks ago, a violent storm line called a derecho [2] passed through our area; thousands of people lost power – not for a few hours, but in some cases, for a week or more. The lines queued up real fast at local gas stations – the ones with still-operable pumps, anyhow.

EU Bites the Hand that Feeds It: Gazprom Will Bite Back

Sept. 11, 2012 Gazprom has Europe's natural gas market in a stranglehold and Europe is attempting to fight back, first with a raid last year on the Russian giant's offices and then with a probe launched earlier this week against its allegedly illicit efforts to control the EU's natural gas supplies. The bottom line is that the same natural gas revolution in the US, which was enabled by hydraulic fracturing (fracking), is now threatening to loosen Gazprom's noose on the EU, and Gazprom simply won't have it. To head off a potential natural gas revolution in the EU, Gazprom is pulling out all the stops, and EU officials say that the company has been illegally throwing obstacles in the way of European gas diversification. Poland's situation is a case in point.
