March 17, 2013 “The Tony Blair Faith Foundation is … honouring International Women’s Day …” (Tony Blair Faith Foundation, 5th March 2013.) It was former British Prime Minister Harold Wilson who is attributed with the quote “a week is a long time in politics”, referring to the speedy shifting sands of political priorities. If a week is a while, approaching twelve years is a millennium. Remember the deluge of political concern over the subjugation of Afghan women at the time of the October 2001 invasion? The tsunami of documentaries, articles, books on their plight, contributing to the justification of another invasion – actually for $trillions of minerals, a geographically strategic country and a pipeline. It is salutary to recap a few.

SYDNEY, Feb 28 2013 (IPS) - Women face greater odds in achieving equal political representation in the Pacific Islands than in any other region of the world, holding just 3 percent of seats in national parliaments, compared to 20 percent in Sub-Saharan Africa and 18.5 percent in South East Asia. Following the first Pacific Women’s Parliamentary Partnerships Forum hosted by the Australian government in Sydney this month, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, the longest serving female parliamentarian in the Pacific region, spoke to IPS about the challenges of gaining political office and some of the measures being pursued to redress the stark imbalance. Fiame was first elected in 1985 to the parliament of Samoa, a Polynesian nation located north-east of Fiji and first in the region to achieve Independence in 1962. She is a ‘matai’ or high chief, as was her father, Fiame Mata’afa Faumuina Mulinu’u II, the first prime minister of Samoa.

Equal Opportunity, Our National Myth

Feb. 17, 2013 resident Obama's second Inaugural Address used soaring language to reaffirm America's commitment to the dream of equality of opportunity: "We are true to our creed when a little girl born into the bleakest poverty knows that she has the same chance to succeed as anybody else, because she is an American; she is free, and she is equal, not just in the eyes of God but also in our own." The gap between aspiration and reality could hardly be wider. Today, the United States has less equality of opportunity than almost any other advanced industrial country. Study after study has exposed the myth that America is a land of opportunity.

Dec. 17, 2012 Barbara Prammer President of the Austrian National Council stated that 35 Million Girls Worldwide Not in School during the opening session of mobilizing resources to empower women and girls: a dialogue among policy makers at UNOV in which experts from governments, the United Nations, civil society, parliaments, women’s organizations and the private sector discussed ways to advance gender equality and empowerment of women. Delegates have discussed how the gender equality and women’s empowerment agenda can be promoted in international development cooperation and in the post-2015 development agenda under discussion, which will serve as the next international framework building upon the current Millennium Development Goals. The meeting will provide an opportunity for key stakeholder groups to explore how best to nurture gender equality and the empowerment of women in light of emerging sustainable development challenges. The Austrian National Council Prammer said: “We are aware of the fact that worldwide the multiple crises present challenges for development cooperation; and we all know that the global development community finds itself at an important crossroad.

Oct. 19, 2012 'Dreams from My Real Father' proves hot to handle for tiny Midwest city A tea party group in Fairfield, Iowa, had put up posters, advertised and spoken on the radio, excited about bringing filmmaker Joel Gilbert to town to show and answer questions about his Obama exposé, “Dreams from My Real Father.” But then rumors of complaints began to circulate in this small city of 9,464, and controversy erupted. Only days before the Oct. 13 event, The Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, where the film was to be shown, cancelled the event until its board could evaluate whether such a politically hot-topic film would violate the Center’s non-profit status.

July 2, 2012 Gruesome attacks leave broken bones, life-threatening injuries in their wake If Chaim Amalek had his way, no one would know that mobs of black people are attacking and beating and robbing Jews in the New York area. Or that they shout anti-Semitic epithets. Or that they target Jews because “they don’t fight back.” “Such information can only serve to heighten racial tensions between these two groups,” said Amalek, an alias for New York video blogger Luke Ford. “Let us all look beyond the issue of race (in any event a mere social construct) and instead celebrate our diversity.

Muslim employees of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington said they felt discriminated against after being barred over the weekend from floors where an Israeli delegation was staying, a Muslim advocacy group said. One hotel worker whose duties involve going to all the hotel's floors said he was preparing for his shift Friday when his supervisor told him to steer clear of the eighth and ninth floors, where Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and his delegation had booked rooms. "I said, 'Why?' " said the worker, who is Muslim and wanted to remain unidentified to protect his job. He said his supervisor told him, "They're Israelis there, and they don't want no face-to-face with Muslims." The hotel's general manager, Amanda Hyndman, said the hotel rearranged some shifts and told some workers not to come in after a routine State Department background check found "irregularities" in the checks of 12 employees.
