Dec. 23, 2012 —PLEASE EMAIL TO FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND INTERNATIONAL NEWS GROUPS— Prime Minister Stephen Harper has passed legislation to let China’s China National Offshore Oil Corporation buy to Nexen. This takeover deal among other things puts three to six billion barrels of tar sands oil in CNOOC’s hands, would create devastating global climate effects if CNOOC exploits Nexen’s reserves to their fullest extent. Canada has also legally exited the Kyoto Protocol just today, as well as already removed the protection of over 2 million lakes and rivers – allowing tar sands development anywhere. And the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) international treaty passed and can come into effect at any given moment without notice.

November 21, 2012 The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister, and all Members of Parliament Dear Prime Minister Harper and Members of Parliament, We represent First Nations and environmental, recreation and grassroots groups supported by more than half a million Canadians. We are disappointed that, despite the opposition of millions of Canadians to the attacks on nature and democracy in omnibus bill C-38, the government has again chosen to rewrite some of Canada's foundational environmental protection laws by inappropriately including amendments in another massive omnibus bill, C-45. Again, this is a two-pronged attack on our democratic processes, as this bill seems designed to short-circuit parliamentary discussion of major legislative changes that would significantly reduce opportunities for public consultation. Bill C-45 would further undermine the protection of Canadian nature by making substantial changes to the Navigable Waters Protection Act (NWPA, proposed to be the Navigation Protection Act), the Fisheries Act and the Hazardous Materials Information Review Act — critical laws that were once used to steward a sustainable environment, clean water and healthy oceans for all Canadians. Together, the changes proposed in the omnibus bill would further weaken Canada’s environmental laws, remove critical federal safeguards, and reduce opportunities for the public to have their say about projects that could threaten the air, water, soil and ecosystems on which all Canadians, and our economy, depend.

Dec. 8, 2012 [RT] The prominent Native American activist Russell Means passed away on October 22. In 2008 he met with RT to talk about the Native Americans withdrawal from the US, their fight for recognition and his unhappiness with US citizenship. At the end of 2007, a large group of Native Americans from South Dakota declared the independence of the Lakotah Republic from the United States, and renounced their US citizenship. Following the incident RT’s Nadezhda Kevorkova met Russell Means, who told her about his struggle for independence.

Oct. 8, 2012 New programs to teach and restore the lost language and cultural heritage of the Lakota Sioux offers hope for the children who live on reservations where dire poverty, suicide, unemployment and substance abuse have become a way of life. For more than a century the Lakota language endured a deliberate and systematic attempt to eradicate it. As a tool of colonization, the killing of language was a means of severing indigenous people's ties to their culture, history and spirituality. General Richard Henry Pratt in 1878 formed the first of many Indian boarding schools designed to "elevate" the Lakota to white culture.

Kevin Annett, Secretary of the International Tribunal for Crimes of Church and States (www.itccs.org), the Mohawk Institute was “set up by the Anglican Church of England in 1832 to imprison and destroy generations of Mohawk children.

It was a cold and snowy night in Boston, January 6, 1836. Ice-filled wagon tracks rutted Federal Street and icicles sparkled in the flickering light of the oil street lamps. Inside the Odeion Theater, a Methodist minister who insisted he was the great-great-grandson of a famous Indian chief told a story that was even colder.

Coup d’état - The Historical Framework of Globalization

Our era is largely defined by two highly interlinked concepts: globalization and the so-called “war on terrorism.” As geopolitical-economic operatives, both concepts complement each other as significant means to specific ends; both shape important aspects of our daily lives and determine form and content of much that passes for public discourse. Particularly in Europe and in the United States, populations are kept vigilant to the “clear and present dangers” ostensibly posed by “international terrorism” through mnemonic icons of troop movements in Central Asia and/or strategically deployed bomb plots that are purportedly thwarted “just in time” by our intelligence services. As if copied from the lecture notes of Carl Schmitt, a totalitarian “enemy” has been constructed which can conveniently be called back into service at a moment’s notice should public memory begin to fade. Globalization has proceeded by means of three distinct but clearly interwoven interpretations and representations of the world in toto: as the sociopolitical “cosmopolitan moment” [1] (to borrow a term coined by Seyla Benhabib) of the globe as the embodiment of our lifeworld; as the stage of operations for multinational corporate/financial interests; and as the battlefield on which incited conflicts are seen as requiring comprehensive, global solutions which are to be achieved through a New World Order.

Native American farmers and ranchers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced an historic agreement to settle a nationwide class action lawsuit (Keepseagle v. Vilsack) that alleged discrimination in USDA’s farm loan program dating back to 1981. The agreement brings to an end 11 years of litigation, and marks the beginning of what is expected to be a new partnership between USDA and the Native American community.

SEATTLE -- Native American community leaders are angry about the killing of John Williams earlier this week and they want the Mayor, Police Chief and anybody else who will listen to know it. John T. Williams was shot and killed by a Seattle police officer on Monday after being ordered to drop a knife with a 3-inch blade and a piece of wood. Many members of Seattle's Native American community say the death of the woodcarver was not the first time they've been targeted by police. Williams was a First Nations totem carver who was reportedly deaf in one ear.

nts Confusion, mistrust remains in Indian land redress Shirley Butterfly DeVolve inherited 52 acres on Montana's vast Blackfeet Indian Reservation when her father died in 1980. The problem is, a part of an acre is on this ridge, a fraction of an acre in that valley, one-hundredth of an acre here and there. Dozens of relatives own tiny adjacent parcels, making it difficult for anyone to use or sell the land. DeVolve, 57, has a map of the parcels, much of it leased for decades by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs to private interests for cattle grazing. But the federal government _ which serves as trustee for some 56 million acres of land owned by tens of thousands of American Indians and Alaska Natives _ seldom sent checks, DeVolve said.
