May 3, 2013 Fires are spreading in two different areas in California, one spreading to more than 6,000 acres as of Thursday afternoon. The main fire spread about 50 miles outside of Los Angeles as hundreds of firefighters tried to stop it. Evacuation orders included the smoke-choked campus of California State University, according to the Associated Press. The area is at the western edge of the Santa Monica Mountains, which abruptly descend to a coastal plain. It was possible the flames could burn all the way to the Pacific Ocean, about 10 miles from the start point.

Chechnya High Rise Burns For 29 Hours With No Collapse, WTC7?

April 4, 2013 On April 3rd Chechnya’s tallest building, a luxury hotel, caught fire and burned for 29 hours before finally being put out. The building is completely destroyed, however it did not collapse. This raises many questions as to how World Trade Center 7 could have collapsed on 9/11 with only small fires on a couple of floors. Looking at the photo taken of yesterdays blaze and comparing it to the WTC 7 photo taken on 9/11, we see two very different situations. In one we see a large portion of the building on fire and the fire appears to have been burning for some time.

Sept. 17, 29012 Fire tornadoes occur when a column of warm, rising air contacts with - or creates - fire on the ground An astonished filmmaker is coming to grips with the moment he witnessed one of nature's rarest phenomenons - a tornado comprised entirely of fire- and lived to tell the tale. Chris Tangey had been out in Alice Springs, Australia, scouting locations for a new movie. After finishing the task, he went over to help workers at a cattle station when he was confronted by one of nature's most intimidating spectacles.
Aug. 15, 2012 (CNN) -- Whipped by high winds, wildfires in central Washington state have scorched 28,000 acres and destroyed at least 60 buildings, officials said Tuesday. One of those structures was the home of Elaine Burt. After she left her home near Ellensburg she received terrible news from a neighbor; she'd lost more than a home -- all her dogs had died, too, CNN affiliate KING reported. "They're all dead, and my house is gone," she said as her neighbor phoned her with an update.

6/11/12 An out-of-control wildfire in the western US state of Colorado more than doubled in size overnight, with one person missing and up to 100 structures destroyed, officials said Monday. In neighboring New Mexico, a blaze was also burning out of control, although authorities said a lull in the weather was providing an opportunity to make progress against the fire. In Colorado, firefighters were struggling to get a grip on the flames, fanned by high winds. "The hope for containment today is tenuous and entirely dependent on weather conditions," said fire services commander Bill Hohnenberg. The blaze, dubbed the High Park Fire, broke out early Saturday near Fort Collins, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of Denver.

(NaturalNews) As fires raged across central Texas for the past three days, local citizens sprang into action to protect their lives and property. Local churches opened their doors and began hosting refugees left homeless by the fires which have now destroyed more than 1,000 homes and 100,000 acres across the state in just the past week. Several branches of the YMCA also began hosting families with children, and a public school in Bastrop County opened its doors to serve as an emergency relief center.
Massive wildfires threaten to ignite 30000 barrels of plutonium waste at New Mexico nuclear weapons facility, EPA on radiation alert

(NaturalNews) Threats of radioactive disaster from what is shaping up to be the largest wildfire in the state's history are escalating, as heavy winds and plenty of dry brush have fueled flames to within 50 feet of New Mexico's Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), home of the first atomic bomb. Crews claim there are currently no fires burning on the lab's 36 square mile property, but the entire town of Los Alamos, population 11,000, has been evacuated, and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now on radiation alert in the area. As of Sunday, the massive wildfire had already burned up nearly 145 square miles of land across New Mexico, or 92,735 acres, which is just a few hundred acres short of the massive Dry Lakes fire that swept Gila National Forest in 2003. But the current wildfire's proximity to the nuclear facility is particularly troubling because there are about 30,000 55-gallon drums of radioactive plutonium waste on the site that, according to some reports, are not particularly well-protected. "The concern is that these drums will get so hot that they'll burst," said Joni Arends, executive director of Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety.

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) — Thousands of residents calmly fled Monday from the mesa-top town that's home to the Los Alamos nuclear laboratory, ahead of an approaching wildfire that sent up towering plumes of smoke, rained down ash and sparked a spot fire on lab property where scientists 50 years ago conducted underground tests of radioactive explosives. Los Alamos National Laboratory officials said that the spot fire was soon contained and no contamination was released. They also assured that radioactive materials stored in various spots elsewhere on the sprawling lab were safe from flames.

Reuters) - A raging wildfire in Los Alamos on Monday briefly entered the property of the nation's preeminent nuclear facility, Los Alamos National Laboratory, a vast complex that houses research laboratories and a plutonium facility. A mandatory evacuation has been ordered for the town of Los Alamos, which has a population of about 12,000. Firefighters were able to douse the flames on the one-acre "spot fire" just inside the southwestern boundary of the lab site, about 25 miles outside Santa Fe, authorities said. Buildings still have not been touched by flames, and authorities said there was little threat to sensitive areas of the 28,000-acre complex. The laboratory's plutonium facility is on the northeast side of the complex, while the fire seems to be moving south and east, said another lab spokesman, Kevin Roark.

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Fire crews flooded the ruins of burning homes with water early Friday after a massive explosion apparently triggered by a broken gas line sent flames roaring through a neighborhood near San Francisco, destroying more than 50 houses. There was one confirmed death and reports of several others. Thursday night's explosion was heard for miles and shot a fireball more than 1,000 feet in the air and sent frightened residents fleeing for safety and rushing to get belongings out of burning homes, witnesses said. Utility officials said a natural gas line ruptured in the vicinity of the blast, which left a giant crater and sent flames tearing across several suburban blocks in San Bruno just after 6 p.

MOSCOW: Russia on Wednesday admitted wildfires hit swathes of land contaminated by the Chernobyl disaster, raising fears that buried radioactive particles could be released into the air, as a new wildfire broke out near a nuclear facility. The new wildfire caused by lightning flamed up near a major nuclear research centre in the Russian town of Sarov, causing the plant's management to ask firefighters and troops to reverse their withdrawal. Russia had begun withdrawing hundreds of firefighters and soldiers sent to douse the fires around Sarov, a town 500 kilometres east of Moscow which houses the country's main nuclear research facility and is still closed to foreigners. "The centre's director Valentin Kostioukov has asked the emergency situations ministry urgently to suspend the withdrawal of troops from Sarov and send in heavy equipment as reinforcements," it said. Smog from the wildfires that shrouded Moscow for days triggering a public health crisis finally dissipated as the authorities claimed the total area on fire in Russia had halved over the last 24 hours.

Sept. 2, 2009 Soaring temperatures across the western United States have given rise to a string of massive wildfires this past week. More than 120,000 acres (485 square kilometers) have burned in the state of California alone, with thousands forced to flee their homes. Smoke from Station Fire Blankets Southern California (NASA/GSFC/LaRC/JPL, MISR Team) Fire officials estimate that it will take at least another two weeks before the fires in California can be contained. Despite the absence of high winds, which are typically the primary factor in the quick spread of wildfires, the fires have nonetheless grown massively.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency last night and strong winds were forecast for Thursday, heightening fears of the fires spreading. Photos late afternoon - 6 May | Photo 02 see larger image Santa Barbara officials said 5,430 houses were under mandatory evacuation, leaving over 13,000 people to find a place to stay for the night and worrying about their homes. The fire, which began Tuesday, appeared to be dying down through most of Wednesday, said the CBC's Steve Futterman, reporting from Santa Barbara. But later that evening, gusts approaching 100 kilometres an hour hit the area, pushing the flames from north to south and into neighbourhoods around the town.

March 22, 2009 NAIVASHA, Kenya, March 22 (Reuters) - Flames leapt off the summit of one of Kenya's best-known mountains on Sunday as a bush fire razed the dry slopes and sent wildlife fleeing. Residents near Mount Longonot, an extinct volcano in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, said the blaze, which began on Saturday, might have been caused by illegal charcoal-burners. "It's the biggest fire I have ever seen here in the last 10 years," said Charles Mburu, from nearby Longonot town. Fires are common around Longonot, and in other parts of the east African nation, during dry periods. Kenya is suffering a drought this year that has parched the landscape, left farmers facing ruin, and contributed to hunger the government says is affecting 10 million people.

March 8, 2009 EDMOND, Okla. (AP) — Several wildfires broke out across Oklahoma Friday, and weather conditions that contributed to the rapid spread of the flames were expected to improve only slightly during the weekend. No serious injuries have been reported. A grass fire threatened more than a dozen homes in a new Edmond housing addition before being brought under control shortly after noon, said Edmond Assistant Fire Chief Tim Wheeler. The addition does not yet have fire hydrants and trucks from Edmond, Guthrie, Deer Creek and Oak Cliff fire departments were hauling in water to help fight the flames.

If you look closely at this satellite image, you will see the current active fires in red and flames in pink. The areas previously burned are in brick red. The media has been saying that there are about 400 separate locations in which the fires have been set, and it may very well be true judging from the huge coverage and number of active individual fires in the image. Note there are four main groups of fires, one very small group to the northwest of Port Philip Bay (the top of which sits the city of Melbourne), two big ones northeast of Port Philip Bay and one much smaller group further northeast.

Authorities said Tuesday the blaze roaring through a steep, dry river canyon had destroyed 25 homes, and forced the evacuation of 300 others in the Sierra Nevada foothill towns of Midpines and Coulterville.
Posted 7/5/08 SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) — California's wildfires blazed across the state on Friday, with an army of firefighters desperately trying to staunch the flames as they edged towards populated regions. State officials said 19,925 personnel were battling 60 active fires, which were among 1,800 blazes which have scorched nearly 521,000 acres (210,800 hectares) since being triggered by lightning a fortnight ago. The focal point of containment efforts is a wind-driven blaze besieging the picturesque village of Big Sur, a normally bustling tourist haven around 120 miles (193 kilometers) south of San Francisco. The blaze threatening the town has swept through 65,393 acres of the Los Padres National Forest and was only five percent contained according to latest figures on Friday. With a combination high temperatures, low humidity and offshore gusts fanning the fires, officials have said they are battling against a "perfect storm" of weather conditions.
